Spilomena malabarica
News:
Scientists in India have discovered a new species of aphid wasp, Spilomena
malabarica, from Kerala.
About Spilomena malabarica
Spilomena malabarica is a newly identified species of aphid wasp, belonging to
a group of predatory wasps that prey on aphids and other small plant pests.
The species was discovered in Kozhikode district, Kerala.
Its name, “malabarica,” commemorates the historic Malabar region of Kerala
where the type specimen was collected.
It is the 11th species of the genus Spilomena reported from India and the 98th
species known globally.
Key Features
A tiny black-and-brown wasp, measuring just over 3.5 mm in length.
Possesses a unique wing venation pattern, distinguishing it from closely related
species.
The forewing contains only one submarginal cell, a rare feature within the
genus.
Although closely related to Spilomena unus, it differs in several important
morphological characteristics.
The head is proportionately shaped, without unusual elongation.
It has a comparatively flatter face (less convex clypeus), which aids in species
identification.
Ecological Importance
Functions as a natural predator of aphids and other plant pests.
Supports biological pest control, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides.
Contributes to maintaining ecological balance and sustainable agriculture.
