Woolly-Necked Stork
📰 Why in News
• Rare sightings of the Woolly-necked stork have been reported from paddy
fields near Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
📌 Taxonomy & Nomenclature
• Also called the White-necked stork or Bishop stork.
• It is a large wading bird of the family Ciconiidae.
• Scientific name: Ciconia episcopus.
🌍 Habitat & Distribution
• Distributed across tropical regions; found in Africa and Asia (India to
Indonesia).
• In India, relatively more common in northern regions.
• Occupies open habitats like grasslands, agricultural fields, riverbanks,
ponds, and wetlands.
🪶 Physical Features
• Broad-winged bird adapted for soaring using thermal currents.
• Predominantly black body with a characteristic woolly white neck and white
lower belly.
• Upperparts have a glossy green sheen; underside may show a purplish tint.
• Juveniles appear similar but with duller colouring.
