Black Panther
Why in News: A rare black panther was captured in Kerala, drawing attention to melanistic leopards in the Western Ghats.
What is a Black Panther?
• A black panther is not a separate species. It is a leopard (Panthera pardus) showing melanism, or excess production of the dark pigment melanin.
• The leopard's rosette pattern remains present and can still be visible in bright light.
• In leopards, melanism is caused by a recessive gene and is more common in dense, humid forests.
Hotspots Mentioned in the Source
• Kali Tiger Reserve in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka - formerly Dandeli-Anshi, renamed in 2015, and located along the Kali River.
• Nagarhole/Kabini landscape and the Western Ghats of Goa are also mentioned as hotspots.
• The source notes that Karnataka is said to hold India's largest black-panther population.
Memory Lock
• Black panther = melanistic leopard, not a separate species.
• Species = Panthera pardus.
• Melanism in leopards = recessive trait.
• More common in dense, humid forests.

2. Amphibian Extinction Risk: Heat-Driven Sex Reversal
Why in News: A 2026 Science Advances study on wild frogs found that heat-induced sex-reversed males father fewer offspring, so warming-driven male-biased sex ratios may not correct themselves and could raise extinction risk.
What is Sex Reversal?
• Sex reversal occurs when an animal develops a sex opposite to its genetic or chromosomal sex.
• It can be triggered during early development by temperature or chemicals, including endocrine disruptors such as oestrogen-mimicking compounds.
What the Study Found
• In frogs, heat can turn genetic females into males, producing too many males and fewer egg-laying females.
• The sex-reversed males in the study fathered fewer offspring.
• The source also reports that their sons and daughters were weaker against viral infection after heat stress.
Memory Lock
• Sex reversal = phenotypic sex differs from genetic sex.
• Triggers can include heat and endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
• In frogs, warming can shift sex ratios towards males.
• Study concern = lower reproduction + weaker viral resistance.

3. Smart Glasses and Privacy
Why in News: Norway's government proposed a temporary, location-based ban on smart glasses in schools, health facilities, changing rooms and playgrounds because of privacy concerns.
What are Smart Glasses?
• Smart glasses are eyewear fitted with cameras, microphones, speakers and sensors.
• Some models also include a head-up display (HUD), and many newer devices carry AI assistants.
Why the Privacy Concern?
• The main concern is covert recording of bystanders who may not know they are being filmed or heard.
• The source also flags real-time facial recognition of bystanders.
Uses Mentioned in the Source
• Policing and defence.
• Surgery and telemedicine.
• Warehouses, including barcode scanning.
• Disaster response.
