Nobel Economics 2026

Why in News: The 2026 Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Robert E. Hall of Stanford and Michael Woodford of Columbia for 'microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation'. The prize money is SEK 12 million.

Robert E. Hall: Households and Demand

• Hall's 1978 idea: consumer spending depends on expected future income, so consumption changes mainly when new and unpredictable information arrives - described as a 'random walk' of consumption.

• The source notes that Hall and Mishkin (1982) found roughly 80% of households plan ahead, while the rest live hand-to-mouth.

• Policy relevance: fear of job loss can increase precautionary saving; Hall also worked on unemployment and business-cycle dating.

Michael Woodford: Firms, Prices and Expectations

• Woodford's New Keynesian framework explains price-setting through firms' expectations of future costs and interest rates.

• His work is associated with 'Interest and Prices' (2003).

• Policy relevance: inflation targeting and forward guidance work partly by using clear central-bank communication to influence expectations.

Memory Lock

• Hall = households / demand side / expected future income.

• Woodford = firms, prices / supply side / expectations.

• Core theme = micro foundations for macro stabilisation.

• Policy link = precautionary saving + inflation targeting / forward guidance.

2. Retail Inflation Rises to 5.54%

Why in News: CPI inflation rose to 5.54% in September 2026 from 4.83% in August, nearing the 6% upper limit. Food inflation reached 7.74%; the source notes onion prices were up 108%. Rural inflation was 6.08% and urban inflation 4.88%.

Three Inflation Measures to Distinguish

• Headline inflation = change in the full Consumer Price Index basket.

• Food inflation = Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), covering food items.

• Core inflation = headline inflation minus volatile food and fuel; the source notes gold/silver and petrol are also often excluded to reveal underlying demand pressure.

Who Publishes What?

• CPI is published by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, on the 12th of every month.

• WPI is published by the Office of the Economic Adviser under DPIIT.

New CPI Series

• Base year: 2024 = 100; first released on 12 February 2026.

• Food weight reduced from 45.86% to 36.75%.

• Housing weight increased to 17.67%.

• Number of items increased from 299 to 358.

• Prices are also collected from 12 online platforms; OTT/streaming and rural rent were added.

Current Cost-Push Risk in the Source

• The source notes crude near $110 per barrel amid the West Asia conflict.

• It flags a risk of 'inflation generalisation' - cost pressure spreading from energy into a wider range of goods.

Memory Lock

• September CPI = 5.54%; CFPI = 7.74%.

• Rural = 6.08%; Urban = 4.88%.

• CPI publisher = NSO, MoSPI.

• WPI publisher = Office of Economic Adviser, DPIIT.

• New CPI base = 2024 = 100.

POLITY & SOCIAL JUSTICE

3. Karnataka HC Strikes Down SC/ST Quota Hike

Why in News: The Karnataka High Court struck down the Karnataka SC/ST Reservation Act, 2022, which had raised SC reservation from 15% to 17% and ST reservation from 3% to 7%, because total reservation crossed the 50% ceiling.

Constitutional Provisions to Remember

• Article 15(4): permits special provisions for socially and educationally backward classes, SCs and STs; linked in the source to the 1st Constitutional Amendment, 1951.

• Article 15(5): permits reservation in educational institutions, including private unaided institutions; linked to the 93rd Amendment, 2005.

• Article 16(4): permits reservation in public posts for backward classes not adequately represented.

• Article 16(4A): reservation in promotion for SCs and STs; linked to the 77th Amendment, 1995.

• Article 16(4B): carry-forward of unfilled reserved vacancies; linked to the 81st Amendment, 2000.

• Articles 15(6) and 16(6): provide 10% EWS reservation; linked to the 103rd Amendment, 2019.
