• India’s External Affairs Minister recently reviewed bilateral relations with Suriname
during the 9th Joint Commission Meeting held in Paramaribo, the capital city of the country.
📍 Location and Geographical Setting
• Suriname is situated in the northern part of South America, slightly above the
Equator, within the Guiana Shield region.
• The country is also considered a part of the Caribbean and the West Indies
region.
• It is the smallest country in South America in terms of both population and land
area.
🌳 Environmental Significance
• More than 90 percent of Suriname’s land area is covered by tropical rainforests.
• It possesses the highest proportion of forest cover among all countries globally.
🧭 Boundaries
• The Atlantic Ocean lies to the north of Suriname.
• French Guiana borders it to the east, Brazil to the south, and Guyana to the
west.
🏙 Capital City
• Paramaribo, the capital city, is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for
its well-preserved Dutch colonial architecture.
🌊 Important Rivers
• Major rivers of Suriname include the Corantijn River, which forms part of the
boundary with Guyana, and the Marowijne River, which forms part of the border
with French Guiana.

• By mid-2024, the number of international migrants worldwide had reached
nearly 304 million.
• Migrants constituted around 3.7 percent of the global population.
• The number of migrant workers increased by more than 30 million between
2013 and 2022.

encourage innovation across economies.

that its patented ANEEL fuel successfully
completed a high-burnup irradiation test
at the Advanced Test Reactor located at
Idaho National Laboratory.

• ANEEL stands for Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life.
• It is an advanced nuclear fuel that combines thorium and uranium to create a
cleaner, safer, and more efficient nuclear energy source.
⚙ Reactor Compatibility
• The fuel has been specifically designed for use in Pressurised Heavy Water
Reactors (PHWRs).
👨🔬 Naming of the Fuel
• ANEEL fuel has been named after Dr. Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of the
Atomic Energy Commission of India and a noted nuclear scientist.
