Koraga Tribe
News:
The socio-economic challenges faced by the Koraga Tribe were highlighted in the UN-Habitat World Cities Report 2026, drawing attention tomissues of housing inequality and marginalisation.
About the Tribe:
• The Koraga are an indigenous tribal community primarily concentrated in the
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka and the Kasaragod district
of Kerala.
• Smaller Koraga settlements are also found across several other districts of
Karnataka.
• They are recognized as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).
Language:
• The community speaks Koraga Bhasha, their traditional language, along with
Tulu.
Culture and Livelihood:
• Agriculture and forest-based activities form the backbone of their livelihood.
• They are renowned for traditional handicrafts, especially basket weaving.
• Folk dances, rituals, and indigenous traditions play a significant role in
preserving their cultural identity.
• The Koraga society follows a matrilineal system of family inheritance and
lineage.
• Their social structure is organized around clan groups known as “Bali.”
• Community matters are traditionally overseen by the village elder, commonly
referred to as the “Mooppan.”

National Health Accounts (NHA) Estimates 2022–23
News:
The latest National Health Accounts (NHA) Estimates 2022–23 indicate a
significant decline in out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure by households in India.
About NHA Estimates 2022–23:
• The report has been released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
• It is the 10th edition of India’s health expenditure estimates prepared by the
National Health Accounts Technical Secretariat (NHATS) under the National
Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC).
• The estimates are compiled using the System of Health Accounts (SHA), 2011
framework.
Key Findings:
Government Health Expenditure (GHE)
• The share of health expenditure in total government spending increased from
3.78% (2013–14) to 4.89% (2022–23).
• Government Health Expenditure nearly tripled, rising from ₹1.30 lakh crore in
2013–14 to ₹3.85 lakh crore in 2022–23.
• Health expenditure as a share of GDP increased from 1.15% to 1.43% during
the same period.
• Government contribution to Total Health Expenditure (THE) increased from
28.6% to 43.7%.
• Per capita Government Health Expenditure rose substantially from ₹1,042 to
₹2,786.

The Central Government has constituted a high-level committee under the
chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar to examine
demographic changes and their implications.

different regions of the country.
• The committee has been tasked with identifying factors driving these
population changes and assessing their broader impact.
