GS–3 | WATER RESOURCES & CLIMATE CHANGE
3. Day Zero
Subtopic: Urban Water Security, Climate Risk
Value Addition:
Definition:
Stage where usable water reserves fall below a critical threshold, forcing authorities to shut regular tap water supply.
Origin of Term:
Popularised during Cape Town’s 2018 water crisis.
Key Features:
Suspension of household water supply.
Water reserved for hospitals, sanitation, firefighting.
Distribution via controlled public collection points.
Drivers:
Over-extraction of groundwater.
Poor urban planning.
Climate variability and prolonged stress, not just drought.
Global Context:
UN uses the term to highlight systemic urban water collapse, not temporary shortages.
Indian Relevance:
Rapid urbanisation + declining aquifers make Indian cities vulnerable.
