 Extracellular RNA


 Why in News


Recent studies show that extracellular RNA released by bacteria can persist even in

treated drinking water, raising concerns for public health and environmental safety.


 Definition

• Extracellular RNA (exRNA) refers to RNA molecules present outside living cells.


 Occurrence in the Body

• Found in various body fluids such as:

• Blood

• Saliva

• Urine

• Cerebrospinal fluid


 Survival Mechanism

• Remains stable outside cells by being enclosed within protective molecular carriers.

• These carriers protect RNA from enzymatic degradation before it reaches target

cells.


 Types of Extracellular RNA

• Represents a diverse group of RNA molecules.

• Includes:

Small RNAs such as microRNAs

Long non-coding RNAs

Coding RNAs like messenger RNA (mRNA)

Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft


 Malwan


 Why in News

The Indian Navy has inducted Malwan, an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Shallow

Water Craft.


 About Malwan

• It is the second vessel in a series of eight ASW shallow water crafts.


 Design and Construction

Indigenously designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited.


 Naming Significance

• Named after the historic coastal town of Malwan in Maharashtra.


 Legacy

• Continues the legacy of the earlier INS Malwan, a naval minesweeper that served until

2003.


 Key Features


Displacement

• Approximately 1,100 tonnes.


Propulsion System

• Powered by waterjet propulsion, representing a new class of waterjet-driven ASW

vessels.


Armament and Sensors

• Equipped with:

Torpedoes
