Kawal Tiger Reserve

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) identified Kawal Tiger Reserve in Telangana as a 'priority recipient site' for tiger recovery.
Location and Landscape
• Located in Telangana.
• Lies along the Godavari River.
• Part of the Deccan Peninsula-Central Highlands landscape.
• Situated in the Sahyadri Mountain Ranges.
• Located at the southernmost tip of the Central Indian Tiger Landscape (CITL).
Why is it Important?
• It is an important tiger dispersal corridor.
• It connects Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra with Indravati Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh.
• This corridor helps maintain genetic connectivity among Central Indian tiger populations.
Rivers and Habitat
• It is a major catchment of the Godavari River.
• Important local rivers and streams include Peddavagu and Kadam.
• Habitats include dense forests, grasslands, rivers, streams and natural water bodies.
Vegetation
• Forest type: Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest.
• Major flora: Teak, bamboo, Anogeissus latifolia, Mitragyna parviflora, Terminalia crenulata, Terminalia arjuna and Boswellia serrata.

Tetragonula yikhumensis

Researchers discovered a new stingless bee species in Wokha district, Nagaland.
Basic Facts
• Scientific name: Tetragonula yikhumensis.
• It belongs to the genus Tetragonula.
• It was named after Yikhum village, where it was first collected.
• Discovery location: Wokha district, Nagaland.
Key Features
• It is a subterranean, or underground-nesting, stingless bee.
• It has a large body, unique morphology and distinctive nest architecture.
• Body length: About 5.59 mm.
• It is the largest stingless bee recorded in India.
Nesting Behaviour
• Colonies are built more than 2 metres below the ground.
• Nests contain separate honey, pollen-storage and brood chambers.
• The chambers are protected by hard batumen layers.
• Batumen is a mixture of wax, plant resins and other materials.
• Narrow tunnels connect the underground nest to the surface.
Why is the Discovery Important?
• India now has 26 known stingless bee species, up from 25.
• The genus Tetragonula now has 18 recorded species in India.
• It is only the second underground-nesting Tetragonula species documented in India.
• It improves our understanding of India's pollinator diversity and bee evolution.
Traditional and Ecological Importance
• The Lotha community calls these bees 'Litsuk' or 'Ground Bees'.
• Their honey and pollen are traditionally valued for medicinal properties.
• Stingless bees pollinate wild plants and crops.
• They support crop productivity, biodiversity, ecosystem stability and sustainable agriculture.

Picrorhiza kurroa (Kutki)

A sustainable cultivation model in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, is helping conserve the endangered medicinal plant Kutki.
About Kutki
• Picrorhiza kurroa is a perennial medicinal herb with underground rhizomes.
• Its common name is Kutki.
• The name comes from Greek: 'Picros' means bitter and 'Rhiza' means root.
Habitat and Distribution
• It grows in alpine and sub-alpine Himalayan regions at 2,700-4,500 metres.
• In the Himalayas, it occurs from Garhwal to Bhutan and from Kashmir to Sikkim.
• It is also found in Pakistan, Tibet, western China and Myanmar.
Climate and Soil
• It prefers moist, north-west-facing and less exposed slopes.
• Sandy clay soil is ideal.
• Porous soil helps rhizomes spread horizontally and new shoots emerge from nodes.
• Prolonged and intense rainfall causes high mortality.
Propagation
• It is initially propagated through seedlings.
• It can also grow through rhizomes, stolons and offsets.
• Stolons are creeping stems with nodes. They spread over the soil and produce new plants.
Medicinal Uses
• Widely used in Ayurveda and traditional medicine.
• Properties: Anti-pyretic, anthelmintic, carminative, stomachic, hepatoprotective, anti-malarial and laxative.
• In large doses, it acts as a cathartic.
• It improves appetite and stimulates gastric secretions.
• It is used for asthma, cold and cough.
Conservation Status
• IUCN Red List: Endangered.
• CITES: Appendix II.

Kusha Missile

DRDO successfully conducted the first flight test of the Kusha Missile from APJ Abdul Kalam Island.
What is Kusha?
• Kusha is an indigenous long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM).
• It is being developed under Project Kusha.
• It will strengthen India's defence against different aerial threats.
Development
• Developed by DRDO with Indian industry partners.
• Different DRDO laboratories and industries developed the missile, radar, command-and-control centre and other system elements.
Key Features
• Type: Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile.
• Range: Generally more than 200 km.
• It can target fighter aircraft, cruise and other missiles, UAVs and large enemy aircraft.
• It can engage threats across a wide range and altitude envelope.
Project Kusha
• Project Kusha is India's indigenous long-range air-defence programme.
• It is also called the Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS).
• DRDO is developing it as the backbone of India's future long-range air-defence network.
Integration
• The system will integrate with India's Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS).
• This will support network-centric air defence.
