1. Mission Samriddh Gaon

Why in News: The Union Rural Development Minister recently launched the Mission Samriddh Gaon scheme.

What is the Mission?

• Mission Samriddh Gaon is a rural development initiative aimed at creating poverty-free and employment-rich villages.

• It seeks to provide assured basic amenities and sustainable livelihood opportunities to rural households.

Core Objective

• Develop model villages where every family has access to employment or livelihood opportunities.

• Ensure basic amenities for all residents.

• Reduce migration caused by economic compulsion.

Pilot Areas and Nodal Ministry

• The mission will initially be implemented in selected blocks of Madhya Pradesh.

• Pilot areas include Budni Block in Sehore district and Khategaon Block in Dewas district.

• The nodal ministry is the Ministry of Rural Development.

Key Features

• Integrated development framework: Planning will be prepared at family, Gram Panchayat and block levels according to local needs and priorities.

• Convergence of schemes: Programmes related to agriculture, rural development, health, education, employment and livelihoods will be integrated to maximise impact.

Why in News: The Central Government has proposed a complete ban on Carbosulfan.

What is Carbosulfan?

• Carbosulfan is an insecticide belonging to the carbamate group.

• It is used to control a wide range of insect pests affecting crops.

• Its use has been reported in paddy, cotton and horticultural production.

Chemical and Physical Properties

• It is a synthetic 1-benzofuran compound and a carbamate acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.

• It is a toxic, non-persistent orange-yellow to brown viscous liquid.

• It has low water solubility and is non-volatile.

• It is not normally expected to leach into groundwater or persist for long in soil and water systems.

Toxic Metabolite and Health Impact

• Carbosulfan can rapidly metabolise into carbofuran, a highly toxic metabolite.

• Carbofuran can cause severe cholinesterase inhibition and acute systemic toxicity.

• Carbosulfan is minimally irritating to the eyes, slightly irritating to the skin and can act as a dermal sensitiser.

• Its toxicity is linked to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, which disrupts normal nervous-system functioning.

Environmental Impact

• It is extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.

• Exposure can harm non-target species in ecosystems.

Ammannia telanganensis

Why in News: A new plant species was discovered in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana and named Ammannia telanganensis.

About the Species

• Ammannia telanganensis is a newly discovered freshwater flowering plant species from Telangana.

• It belongs to the Lythraceae family.

• The genus Ammannia includes herbaceous plants generally associated with wet and aquatic habitats.

Key Characteristics

• It bears flower clusters on stalks.

• Its seeds have a distinctive cerebriform or brain-like surface pattern.

Habitat and Season

• It grows in wet sandy soils along seasonal streams and on the fringes of water bodies.

• It occurs alongside wetland plants such as Ammannia multiflora and species of Rotala.

• It flowers and fruits between November and February.

Amrabad Tiger Reserve

• The reserve is located in the Nallamala Hills of the Eastern Ghats in Telangana.

• It was originally part of the larger Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve and became a separate reserve after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in 2014.

• The Krishna River and several perennial streams originate within the reserve and contribute to major reservoirs such as Srisailam Dam and Nagarjunasagar Dam.

• The Chenchu tribe is one of the major tribal communities living in the reserve.
