Why in News: The Union Minister for Communications recently launched the revamped Dak MITRA App and Dak Sewa App in New Delhi.
Dak MITRA App - What It Is
• Dak MITRA stands for Mobile Interface for Transactions & Rural Assistance.
• It is a unified digital operational platform for Branch Post Offices across India and serves more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices.
• It was developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT).
• It operates under the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) Platform as part of the Department of Posts IT 2.0 Modernization Programme.
Objective of Dak MITRA
• Enable paperless, real-time and efficient postal and financial transactions at the grassroots level.

Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans)
Why in News: 216 rescued Indian Star Tortoises were recently rehabilitated in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra.
About the Species
• The Indian Star Tortoise is a medium-sized terrestrial tortoise native to the Indian subcontinent.
• It gets its name from the distinctive star-shaped pattern on its shell.
Habitat and Distribution
• It inhabits dry grasslands, scrub forests, semi-arid regions and thorny bush habitats.
• It is mainly found in western India and southern India, especially Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as Sri Lanka.
Physical Features
• The shell has radiating yellow star-like patterns on a dark background, which help in camouflage.
• It can grow up to about 10 inches or 25 cm in length.
• Females are generally larger than males.
Behaviour and Diet
• It is largely solitary and crepuscular, meaning it is most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
• It remains inactive during extremely hot, dry or cold conditions but does not hibernate.
• It is mainly herbivorous and feeds on grasses, leaves, flowers, fruits and succulent plants.
• Its wild lifespan is approximately 35-80 years.
Conservation Status
• IUCN Red List -> Vulnerable (VU).
• CITES -> Appendix I; international commercial trade is generally prohibited.

Mission CosmoCube
Why in News: An international team of scientists announced that Mission CosmoCube could help study faint radio signals from the early universe.
What is CosmoCube?
• CosmoCube is a proposed suitcase-sized satellite mission designed to study the Cosmic Dark Age - the period before the first stars and galaxies formed.
• It aims to detect ancient radio signals from the early universe.
• The mission is being developed by an international team led by the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Main Aim
• Detect the faint 21-centimetre hydrogen line emitted more than 13.5 billion years ago.
• Study conditions that existed before the formation of the first stars and galaxies.
How It Will Work
• The satellite will orbit the Moon.
• It will use the far side of the Moon as a natural shield from radio interference originating on Earth.
• During each two-hour lunar orbit, it will spend about 40 minutes behind the Moon collecting low-frequency radio signals.
• Onboard systems and mathematical models will filter interference from the spacecraft, the Milky Way and other background radio sources.
Why It Matters
• It may help scientists study the Cosmic Dark Age, one of the least understood periods in cosmic history.
• Its observations may provide clues about the role of dark matter in bringing matter together to form the first stars and galaxies.
• Despite its compact size, it is expected to carry a lightweight radio antenna and precision navigation and positioning systems.

Smew (Mergellus albellus)
Why in News: Assam's Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary recorded the Smew, a rare migratory waterbird, for the first time.
About the Bird
• Smew is a medium-sized migratory duck belonging to the Anatidae family.
• It was formally described in 1758 by Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus.
Range and Habitat
• It breeds in the northern taiga forests of Europe and Asia.
• It winters in the Baltic Sea region, Black Sea region, Great Britain, Caspian Sea region, East China, Korea and Japan.
• In India, it is an occasional winter visitor.
• It occurs in freshwater lakes, reservoirs, flooded forests, ice-free rivers, sheltered bays, estuaries, lagoons and tidal creeks.
Identification
• It has a narrow bill with tooth-like edges and a hooked tip, adapted for catching fish.
• Male -> predominantly white, with a black eye mask and black back.
• Female -> grey body, reddish-brown head and white cheek patches.
• In flight, it shows striking black-and-white wing patterns.
Feeding and Conservation
• It is a diving duck and catches prey by diving below the water surface.
• It can swim underwater while pursuing fish and other aquatic prey.
• IUCN Red List -> Least Concern (LC).
