📖 What is a Fjord?
• A fjord is a long, narrow, and deep inlet of seawater that extends inland from
the coast.
🧊 Formation of Fjords
❄ Glacial Origin
• Fjords are created when glaciers carve deep U-shaped valleys through repeated
glaciation over long periods.
🌊 Seawater Inundation
• After glaciers retreat and melt, seawater enters these valleys, resulting in the
formation of fjords.

• The sea-facing opening of a fjord is known as its mouth, which is generally
shallow.
• Fjords are usually extremely long and deep, surrounded by steep mountain
slopes.

Labeo Kaage

Fish Genetic Resources under the PAGR
Centre have recently identified a new
freshwater fish species named Labeo kaage.
📖 About the Species
• Labeo kaage is a newly discovered freshwater fish species.
📍 Discovery Location
• The species was discovered in the Shivanasamudra region of the Cauvery River
basin in Mandya district of Karnataka.
🏷 Origin of the Name
• The term “kaage” is derived from the Kannada word for crow.
• The name reflects the dark body colouration of the fish.
🌐 Local Name
• In Karnataka, the species is locally referred to as “kaage meenu.”
