Value Addition:
Definition: Lightning that occurs during volcanic eruptions due to static charge buildup in ash plumes.
Cause:
Collisions among ash particles and ice crystals within eruption clouds → generate static electricity.
Water vapor content in volcanic plumes is much higher than in normal thunderstorms, intensifying lightning.
Types:
Low-level lightning – near dense ash clouds close to the vent.
High-level lightning – at upper levels of the plume, driven by ice particle collisions.
Historical Record: First described by Pliny the Younger (79 AD) during Mount Vesuvius eruption; later documented by Luigi Palmieri (1858–72) in Italy.
