1. Volcanic Lightning

  • Subtopic: Physical Geography – Volcanic Phenomena

  • Value Addition:

    • Definition: Lightning that occurs during volcanic eruptions due to static charge buildup in ash plumes.

    • Cause:

      • Collisions among ash particles and ice crystals within eruption clouds → generate static electricity.

      • Water vapor content in volcanic plumes is much higher than in normal thunderstorms, intensifying lightning.

    • Types:

      • Low-level lightning – near dense ash clouds close to the vent.

      • High-level lightning – at upper levels of the plume, driven by ice particle collisions.
