WHY IN NEWS:
A performance by more than 13,000 tribal women at the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, Bhogapuram, entered the Guinness World Records as the largest Dhimsa dance.
IN ONE LINE: Dhimsa is a traditional tribal folk dance of Andhra Pradesh, known for synchronised circular formations, coordinated footwork and community participation.
Where did it originate?
Dhimsa is believed to have originated in the Koraput region of present-day Odisha, traditionally associated with the Gond tribe. Over time, it became an important folk tradition among tribal communities of Andhra Pradesh.

• The women dance in synchronised circular formations, while male community members provide the music.
• The performance focuses mainly on coordinated footwork and hand movements rather than facial expression or literary themes.
• The rhythm and movements change with the accompanying music.

Pseudolaguvia khairii
Biodiversity | New freshwater species
WHY IN NEWS:
Researchers discovered a new freshwater catfish species, Pseudolaguvia khairii, in Odisha.
IN ONE LINE:
It is a small hillstream catfish from the Budhabalanga River, identified by a unique fleshy projection at the base of its dorsal fin.
Discovery and naming
• Discovery site: Budhabalanga River, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha.
• The species was named after Khairi, the legendary tigress associated with wildlife conservation and a unique human-animal bond in Odisha.
Taxonomic identity
• Genus: Pseudolaguvia.
• Group: Small hillstream catfishes.
Members of the genus occur in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. They inhabit clear and fast-flowing hill streams and rivers.
What makes the species distinct?
• It is a small freshwater catfish measuring only a few centimetres in length.
• Its defining feature is a fleshy protuberance at the base of the dorsal fin.
• This feature had not previously been recorded in any known species of the genus Pseudolaguvia.
Habitat
The species is adapted to clear, fast-flowing freshwater rivers and hillstream ecosystems with continuously moving water.

Pseudecheneis likimroensis

WHY IN NEWS:
A new catfish species, Pseudecheneis likimroensis, was discovered in the Likimro River of Nagaland and described in the Journal of Ichthyology.
IN ONE LINE: This fast-water adapted catfish uses a flattened body and specialised adhesive organs to survive in the strong currents of Nagaland's hill streams.
Discovery profile
• Named after the Likimro River, where it was first collected.
• Local name: Nupedro.
• Location: Likimro River, Kiphire district, Nagaland, near the India-Myanmar border.
• Identified by researchers from Kohima Science College and the Zoological Survey of India.
Adaptations to fast-flowing water
The species belongs to the genus Pseudecheneis, a group of rheophilic catfishes. "Rheophilic" refers to organisms adapted to flowing water.
• Its body is flattened from top to bottom, helping it remain stable in swift currents.
• It has specialised adhesive organs with ridges separated by grooves, enabling it to cling to rocks.
• It is carnivorous and feeds on insects, larvae and other organisms attached to rocks.
Size
• Holotype: About 11.53 cm.
• Largest recorded specimen: About 13.19 cm.
Likimro River: remember the river system
• A fast-flowing mountain river with rich freshwater biodiversity.
• Flows through eastern Kiphire district in Nagaland.
• Originates near Mount Saramati, the highest peak in Nagaland.
• It is a tributary of the Tizu River.
• The Tizu ultimately joins the Chindwin-Irrawaddy river system in Myanmar.
• Clear water, boulders and rocky stretches make the river suitable for hillstream fishes.

Leptospirosis

Cases of leptospirosis generally rise during the monsoon, leading health authorities to stress preventive measures against this water-borne zoonotic disease.
IN ONE LINE: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted mainly through water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals.
What is leptospirosis?
• A tropical zoonotic bacterial disease affecting humans and animals.
• Common names: Rat Fever and Flood Fever.
• Causative bacterium: Leptospira.
• The bacteria can survive in contaminated water and moist soil.
How does it spread?
The disease spreads through the urine of infected animals, especially rodents, cattle, dogs and cats.
• During the monsoon, infected urine and animal waste can mix with floodwater and mud.
• The bacteria enter the human body through cuts, abrasions, cracked skin or the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth.
• Person-to-person transmission is rare.
Symptoms
• High fever
• Severe headache
• Chills
• Muscle pain
• Vomiting
• Jaundice
• Red eyes
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhoea
• Skin rashes
Possible complications
Without timely treatment, the infection may cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress and multi-organ failure. Severe cases can result in death.
Treatment
• Antibiotics are the primary treatment.
• Severe cases may require intravenous antibiotics and supportive hospital care.
Prevention during the monsoon
• Wear waterproof footwear while walking through floodwater.
• Wash and dry the feet properly after exposure.
• Clean and cover cuts or wounds promptly.
• Maintain sanitation and control rodent populations.
• Drink safe and clean water, particularly after floods.
• Avoid direct contact with potentially contaminated water wherever possible.
Situation in India
Kerala has reported leptospirosis since 1989. The disease has remained endemic in the State for more than three decades and is among its communicable diseases with the highest mortality.
