 IOS SAGAR (Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR)


 Why in the News


The second edition of the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR (IOS SAGAR) initiative has

recently commenced.


 Nature of the Initiative


• IOS SAGAR is a maritime security cooperation programme focused on the

Southwest Indian Ocean region.

• It is designed as an operational engagement initiative to enhance collaboration

among participating countries.


 Participation


• The current edition includes representatives from 16 countries, primarily members of

the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS).


 Strategic Vision


• The initiative reflects India’s vision of SAGAR

Region.


Security and Growth for All in the


• It also aligns with the broader concept of MAHASAGAR, which emphasises collective

and holistic maritime security and regional cooperation.

 Vela carli


 Why in the News


Researchers have recently identified a freshwater crab species, Vela carli in Silent

Valley National Park (Kerala), which exhibited both male and female characteristics

simultaneously.


 Nature of the Species


Vela carli is an endemic freshwater crab species found in the forests and streams of

the Central Western Ghats.


• It belongs to the family Gecarcinucidae.


 Unique Biological Feature


• The species has displayed gynandromorphism, a rare condition where a single

organism shows both male and female traits.


• In this case:


• Some body parts showed male reproductive structures


• Other parts exhibited female features, including gonopores


• This phenomenon is extremely rare in crustaceans and has not been previously

recorded in the Gecarcinucidae family.

 Coconut (Cocos nucifera)


 Why in the News


The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare informed the Lok Sabha

that India is the largest producer of coconuts globally, contributing about 30.37% of

total world production.


 Botanical Identity


• Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a tall palm species belonging to the family Arecaceae.


 Origin and Global Distribution


• The species is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia.

• It spread across the Pacific region through the movement of Indonesian and

Polynesian populations.

• Today, it is widely cultivated in subtropical coastal regions, including:

• India

• Philippines

• Sri Lanka

• Thailand

• Indonesia

• Parts of Oceania


 Distribution in India


• Major coconut-growing states include:

• Kerala

• Tamil Nadu

• Karnataka

• Andhra Pradesh

• Odisha

• Goa
