Maveeran Ondiveeran
WHY IN NEWS: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan recently paid tribute to Maveeran Ondiveeran on his death anniversary, recalling his courage and sacrifice in resisting colonial forces.
Who was Maveeran Ondiveeran?
Identity: Maveeran Ondiveeran, also known as Ondi Veeran, was a renowned Tamil Nadu warrior who fought against the British East India Company.
Meaning of the name: “Ondi” means single-handedly and “Veeran” means brave warrior. The title reflects his reputation for exceptional individual courage in battle.
Community: He belonged to the Arunthathiyar community, which reveres him as a legendary hero.
Family account: Historical accounts state that his grandfather owned cultivable land that was later recovered by Puli Thevar from Irulappillai.
Role in the anti-colonial resistance
• Puli Thevar’s commander: Ondiveeran served as a trusted commander in the army of Puli Thevar, one of the earliest rulers to resist British expansion in South India.
• “Porvaal” of Puli Thevar: Because of his military skill and loyalty, he was popularly called the “Porvaal” (Sword) of Puli Thevar.
• Guerrilla warfare: He was highly skilled in guerrilla warfare and devised strategies suited to different battle conditions.
• Tirunelveli resistance: He played an important role in opposing British East India Company military campaigns in the Tirunelveli region.
Continued resistance: what do the records say?
• Oral traditions and folk narratives suggest that after Puli Thevar’s martyrdom, Ondiveeran continued fighting alongside the armies of Puli Thevar’s sons.
• However, conclusive historical records are not available to fully verify these accounts.
Legacy
• Memorial: A Mani Mandapam (Memorial Hall) in his honour was inaugurated at Palayamkottai on 1 March 2016.
• Postal stamp: A commemorative postal stamp was issued in his honour on 20 August 2022.

WHY IN NEWS: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently launched the “Friends of MY Bharat” Initiative.
What is it?
• A global youth-engagement initiative launched by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform.
• It seeks to connect Indian-origin youth living across the world with India’s nation-building and youth-led programmes.
How will it engage young Indians abroad?
• Global access: Indian-origin students, young professionals and other youth abroad can access information on nation-building activities, volunteering opportunities and youth programmes available on MY Bharat.
• Volunteering: Opportunities are available in areas such as education, environmental protection, health awareness, disaster relief and cultural preservation.
• Know Your India: A dedicated section provides curated information on India’s culture, heritage, history, tourism, travel destinations and notable leaders.
• Diaspora participation: The initiative aims to channel the ideas, skills, experiences and aspirations of global Indian youth towards India’s development journey.
MY Bharat platform: remember the basics
• Launch: MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat) was launched in October 2023 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
• Objective: It places youth at the centre of nation-building through opportunities for volunteering, skill development, leadership development and civic participation.
• Digital ecosystem: It connects the Government, educational institutions, non-profit organisations and industry to enable meaningful youth engagement.

WHY IN NEWS: A newly discovered Himalayan plant has been named Impatiens nimspurjai in honour of legendary Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja.
Know the species
• Family: It belongs to the touch-me-not family, Balsaminaceae.
• Naming: The species honours renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja (Nims Purja) for his contributions to mountaineering.
• Etymology: The scientific name combines “Nims Purja” with “jai”, the Nepali word for jasmine.
Habitat and appearance
• Habitat: It grows on moist, humus-rich slopes in temperate forests and along forest margins in the Himalayan region.
• Growth form: An annual herb that can grow to nearly one metre in height.
• Leaves: Sessile, oblong to lanceolate leaves help distinguish it from related species.
• Flowers: Small clusters of predominantly yellow flowers with a distinct purple tinge.
• Related species: Closely related to Impatiens radiata, Impatiens harae and Impatiens wallichii, other balsam species native to the Himalayas.
