Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) Weapon
đź“°Â Why in News
• The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air
Force recently conducted the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range
Augmentation (TARA) weapon system off the coast of Odisha.
đź“–Â What is TARA?
• TARA is India’s first indigenously developed glide weapon system designed to
convert unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions.
⚙ Working Mechanism
• After being released from an aircraft, the glide weapon uses aerodynamic lift
and onboard guidance systems to move towards its target.
• Unlike conventional free-fall bombs, the system does not rely solely on gravity
for descent.
🏢 Developed By
• The TARA weapon system has been designed and developed by Research
Centre Imarat (RCI) along with other DRDO laboratories.
