GS Paper-3: Environment
⭐ Tar Balls
⭐ Why in News
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has issued
draft guidelines for the management of tar balls.
⭐ Definition & Nature
• Tar balls are small, dark, sticky lumps of weathered oil found in marine
environments.
• They form due to oil spills or natural seepage of petroleum in oceans.
⭐ Formation Process
• Originate from the weathering of crude oil in marine conditions.
• Ocean currents and waves transport them from offshore regions to coastlines.
• Undergo physical, chemical, and biological changes, forming semi-solid or solid
masses.
• Eventually wash ashore, posing environmental and health risks.
• Size varies widely—from tiny globules to large lumps.
⭐ Composition
• Contain toxic substances such as:
• Heavy metals
• Trace elements
• Persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
⭐ Environmental Impact
• Accumulate along coastal areas, harming marine ecosystems.
• Pose threats to:
• Seabirds
• Fish
• Marine animals like sea turtles (which may ingest them)

• It is a first-of-its-kind behavioural study jointly conducted by ISRO and the
Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAF).
⭐ Objective
• To examine the physiological, psychological, and operational behaviour of
astronauts and ground teams in high-altitude conditions.
⭐ Location & Environment
• Conducted in Leh, Ladakh, known for:
• High altitude
• Rugged terrain
• Features extreme conditions such as:
• Low temperatures
• Reduced oxygen levels
• Isolation
⭐ Participants & Team
• Involves four selected Indian astronauts (Gaganyaan crew).
• Supported by a multidisciplinary team including:
• Scientists
• Engineers
• Medical experts
• Psychologists
