Osbeckia ulotricha
Why in News: Scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have identified a new flowering plant in the Western Ghats, named Osbeckia ulotricha.
What to Know
• It is a newly identified flowering plant belonging to the Melastomataceae family.
• It was discovered in the shola grasslands of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats.
Key Characteristics
• It is a woolly-haired species endemic to elevations of 1,200-1,500 metres.
• Its leaves are clustered at the apex.
• It has a sub-globose hypanthium, or an almost rounded flower base.
• The ovary is crowned with true bristles - fine, stiff hairs at the top.
• It also possesses an urn-shaped hypanthium with a neck.
• The plant flowers and fruits between February and May.
Habitat
• It mainly occurs along the damp margins of Tropical Montane Wet Temperate Forests (shola).
• It is also found along Montane Temperate Grassland ecosystems.
Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve
• Location -> southern Western Ghats, covering parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
• Established -> 2001.
• Included in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves -> 2016.
• Vegetation includes tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous, montane rainforest and shola-grassland ecosystems.
• Important rivers originating here include Thamirabarani, Neyyar and Karamana.
• Protected areas include Shendurney, Peppara and Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.
Quick Recall
• Family -> Melastomataceae.
• Discovery site -> Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.
• Altitude -> 1,200-1,500 m.
• Flowers/fruits -> February to May.

Ophiorrhiza assamensis
Why in News: Botanists have discovered a new plant species, Ophiorrhiza assamensis, near Guwahati, Assam.
What to Know
• It is a new species of flowering plant found in a moist and shaded habitat near Guwahati.
• It is a perennial herb with large, ribbed leaves and clusters of small white flowers.
• It belongs to the Ophiorrhiza genus of the Rubiaceae family - the same family as coffee.
Why the Genus Matters
• The Ophiorrhiza genus is a natural source of camptothecin.
• Camptothecin is used in the development of medicines for cancers, including colon cancer.
Conservation Concern
• The species is currently known only from a highly localised population.
• This makes it vulnerable to deforestation and development-related habitat changes.
• Because its total population is unknown, researchers have classified it as Data Deficient under IUCN criteria.
Quick Recall
• Location -> near Guwahati, Assam.
• Family -> Rubiaceae.
• Genus -> Ophiorrhiza.
• Important compound -> camptothecin.
• Current IUCN assessment -> Data Deficient.
