WHY IN NEWS:
India and Uzbekistan agreed to deepen their strategic partnership in critical minerals, mining, trade, energy and defence during high-level bilateral talks in New Delhi.
IN ONE LINE: Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked Central Asian country located between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, with Tashkent as its capital.
Basic profile
• Official name: Republic of Uzbekistan.
• It was part of the Soviet Union and became independent in 1991.
• It is known for its Silk Road heritage, Islamic architecture and rich mineral resources.
Location and neighbours
• It lies in the heart of Central Asia, between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers.
• It is doubly landlocked: both Uzbekistan and all the countries directly surrounding it are landlocked.
• Bordering countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.
• Capital: Tashkent, also written as Toshkent.
Major physical features
• Kyzylkum Desert: Covers much of western Uzbekistan, forms part of the Turan Plain and is one of Central Asia's largest deserts.
• Ustyurt Plateau: An arid limestone plateau in western Karakalpakstan, marked by low ridges, sinkholes, salt marshes and steep escarpments.
• Tien Shan and Gissar ranges: Located in the east and southeast. Beshtor Peak, at 4,299 metres, is the country's highest point.
• Aral Sea Basin: The Aral Sea has lost more than 90% of its volume after diversion of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Its dried seabed has formed the Aralkum Desert.
• Fergana and Zeravshan valleys are major agricultural and population centres. Historic cities in these regions include Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
Natural resources
• Uzbekistan has deposits of uranium, gold, copper, molybdenum and rare earth elements.

WHY IN NEWS: Members of the Cholanaikkan tribe recently came out of the forest to receive essential government documents at an event organised by the district administration in Kerala.
IN ONE LINE: The Cholanaikkans are a cave-dwelling PVTG found exclusively in the Nilambur Valley of Kerala within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Who are the Cholanaikkans?
• They are an indigenous tribal community found exclusively in the Nilambur Valley of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Kerala.
• They are popularly called the "Cavemen of Kerala" and are regarded as one of Asia's last surviving cave-dwelling indigenous communities.
Meaning of the name
• The community refers to itself as Malanaikan or Sholanaikan.
• "Shola" or "Chola" means deep forest or thicket, while "Naikan" means king.
Habitat and settlements
• They live deep inside dense forests, usually close to streams and water sources.
• Natural rock caves used as shelters are locally called Kallulai: "Kallu" means rock and "Alai" means cave.
• They do not have permanent dwellings.
Social and cultural profile
• The community is divided into smaller social groups known as Jenmam.
• Their Cholanaikkan language belongs to the Dravidian language family.
• Their livelihood mainly depends on collecting forest produce and other forest-based subsistence activities.
• They are classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).

The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife recommended wildlife clearance for the Panari Pumped Storage Project in the Panna-Ranipur Tiger Corridor.
IN ONE LINE: Panari is a proposed 1,800 MW pumped storage project in Madhya Pradesh that will use the Baghain River and provide nine hours of energy storage.
