WPI Base Year Revision and Producer Price Index (PPI)

News:

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has revised the base year of the

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from 2011–12 to 2022–23 and initiated the phased

introduction of a Producer Price Index (PPI).

Key Changes in the Revised WPI

Expanded Commodity Basket

• The number of commodities covered under WPI has increased from 697 to

957.

• This revision aims to better reflect the structure of the contemporary Indian

economy and industrial production.

Inclusion of Renewable Energy Sources

• Solar, wind, and nuclear energy have been included under the Electricity

category for the first time.

• The change aligns the index with India’s evolving energy mix.

Reclassification of Energy Products

• Crude oil and natural gas have been shifted from the Primary Articles

category to Fuel and Power.

• This creates a more comprehensive representation of primary energy

sources.

Revised Weighting System

• Item weights are now based on Gross Value of Output (GVO) instead of Net

Traded Value (NTV).

• The new approach provides a more accurate reflection of domestic

production patterns.
